Cultural Index Thursday – The Greatest Opening Riffs In Rock And Roll History

Happy Thursday y’all!

It’s a little late, but better late than never, right?!

This week’s Cultural Index Question is stolen straight from AXS TV where they did a whole show on the top opening guitar riffs to start a song. It was so good, I knew we had to rip it off, and we are today.

I’ve got a few ideas in mind for mine nominees. You can nominate as many as you want. Here’s a few of mine.

Rush: Limelight.

AC/DC: Back In Black and Thunder Struck.

Ok, you get the idea. If I do too many I’ll take away from your comments.

So, let’s rock!

  1. Immediate top of my head-showing my age

Can’t you see Marshall tucker band
Heard it in a love song-Marshall tucker band
    Stairway to heaven-zeppelin
    Rocky Mountain way-joe Walsh
And last, but not least-the old standby
    Smoke on the water-deep purple

  2. I won’t get into a single riff as “greatest…”
But, I’ll toss out my “nominees.”

    Start Me Up
    Shook Me All Night Long
    Highway to Hell
Heaven (by Los Lonely Boys. Get into it!)
    Jumpin’ Jack Flash
    All Right Now
    Purple Haze
    Are You Experienced?
    Hotel California
    Day Tripper
Do You Feel Like I Do?
    Life in the Fast Lane

Ok, I should stop. I could make a list that would eat up more bandwidth than a 6 hour video.

  3. “La Grange” is stuck in my head this morning, so I’ll start there.

Van Halen has several good ones: Humans Being. DOA. Unchained.

An underrated, quirky opening riff is “Love Me Two Times” by the Doors.

Two favorites: “Fire on High” by ELO, and “Peace of Mind” by Boston. Strong acoustic openings.

  4. No order. ‪Led Zeppelin “Kashmir,” Eric Clapton “Layla,” The Cure “Fight,” Ramones “Love Kills,” The Class “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” Jimi Hendrix “All Along The Watch Tower,” ‬David Bowie “The Man Who Sold The World,” Mötley Crüe “Dr. Feelgood,” and Guns N Roses “Paradise City”
