The Texas Tech Red Raiders Made An Inferior Team Look Inferior Saturday In Lubbock – That’s A Big Deal
Here’s our quick Sunday Take-Aways from the Red Raiders 48-10 win Saturday over hapless, and you never want to be hapless, West Virginia.
- Congrats Texas Tech fans. You’ve got your QB of the Now and of the Future in Behren Morton. He’s good. In fact, he’s special. We had an inkling he might be that a few weeks ago. He confirmed it Saturday against WVU. He’s already outperformed against better sample size in competition any QB over the last 5 years. He completed three passes in the first half on arm-strength and precision that no Tech QB could do since Patrick Mahomes. That’s right. I said it. In fact, I visited briefly during the game with a former NFL GM who has a Man-Crush on Morton right now. ”Beyond Special” was a phrase used. So, let’s end this whole Joey McGuire First Year Head Coach Speak about having three QB’s and they’re all gonna play stuff. You have one QB. It’s Morton. Embrace it and be glad you may have a talent on your team that nearly every team in the Big 12 wishes they had right now. Hi there, Austin. …
- I am now revising my Official Season Win Total Projection for Texas Tech. Before the season started I said Texas Tech was a 6-6 team plus or minus one. If things went great, seven wins. Bad, five. Having now seen what Texas Tech has done to this point and seeing the elevation at QB, added in with seeing what the back half of the schedule looks like with only TCU as a possible team you won’t be favored against; I am revising up. This Texas Tech team now should track for 7 wins, plus or minus one. Baylor is not good. ISU should and could be done by the time you see them. TCU is living right and will be favored when you play them, but their defense is not nearly as good as many as Tech as played. Kansas. Right back to being a ”Win” on the schedule as we expected. So, 7 wins it is now. That, by the way, is an improvement in a year when many thought the program would take a step back with a first-year, first-time college head coach. Drive it like you stole it Red Raiders.
- This one is for the Texas Tech fans out there on the fence about enjoying what’s going on. Had a guy on Twitter when I said Tech has a QB1 reply, ”ya, but I don’t have to like it”. I mean, what the hell. Just because you maybe thought or wanted someone else to win the job for whatever reason, if you’re a fan of Texas Tech, don’t you think you could at least enjoy the moment? Then there are the fans constantly thinking that something bad is gonna happen. They can’t enjoy the now because they hold themselves prisoner to past frustrations in Texas Tech history, real or perceived. News Flash. The past is gone and Joey McGuire and this program and these players have nothing to do with it. College Football has a short-term memory. College Football fans don’t though. They have to overcome that mind-virus and embrace the now. So, for the rest of the season, I hope Texas Tech fans will let go of negative programming and just enjoy what you’re watching. Might not always be a win, might look ugly at times, might be perfect – but one thing is sure… It has nothing to do with the past.

Take #4
Tech fans still need to learn how to support a winner – they started leaving early in the 3rd qtr yesterday.
Why?
Why stay only if there’s still a chance of losing the game?
Lots of folks have things to do.
Like party and whatnot.
It’s the deal.
The game is entertainment for most. When the entertaining part is over, they seek their entertainment elsewhere. Not saying it’s right or wrong, it just is.

Can’t disagree with you there. We talk about culture change within the locker room – I think the fanbase needs one too. It’s really no different than the “life after UT” argument regarding cheering FOR a team instead of AGAINST one.
Opposing teams need to know that when they come to the Jones that they are in for 60 minutes of hell on the field and 60 minutes of hell from the crowd.
True, but you just described every school every where in 2022.

Well said, Ryan, and I’m glad you said it. Being a long time fan, our history has been one of never knowing which team was fielded from week to week. Honestly I feel like we don’t have to have a nervous stomach before each game bc JM has this team as the toughest, hardest working, and competitive team in the country; that won’t always lead to a win, but there’s a fan confidence in this team that we won’t be a consistent up and down team that defined our past!
Thanks for the comments and thanks for taking time to read the column!
