5 THINGS WE KNOW DURING ADVENT – ALLEN CORBIN

Five Things We Know On A Sunday – Advent Edition

  1. It’s not the Christmas season, it’s the season of Advent. Christmas starts December 25 and ends January 6 and if you’re doing math this is where get the 12 Days of Christmas.
  2. Advent candles and candles at Christmas Eve services are the only appropriate candles for a man to light. I don’t make the rules.
  3. Hallmark movies have three basic ingredients for a movie: Big city woman/man goes back to small town, a family run Christmas tree lot, and a suggestive mother/grandmother who stirs the pot.
  4. Isaiah 9:6-7    [6] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;  and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
  5. In Corbin’s America, I would sign an executive order to have A Charlie Brown Christmas be mandatory viewing in all public and parochial schools for the first Monday in December.

Bonus content:

  • Tamales are a year round treat that should get more love than just during the holidays.
  • Egg Nog is great by itself. It’s also great with brandy or spiced rum.
  • The song Christmas Shoes is the worst Holiday song around. It’s an abomination and shouldn’t have ever been created. Happy Xmas, War is Over is another song that needs to be erased from our collective consciousness.
  • Much is lost in modern Christianity with a lack of Liturgy or a Church calendar. It’s not too late to engage with Advent this holiday season.
