Happy Friday, Y’all !
Has a group of fans and administrators ever needed it to be Friday more than this from Texas Tech this week. . .
It seems like a month ago since the Brendan Sorsby ruling came down that he’d get only a two-game suspension for gambling by a Texas judge. We know the story by heart now.
Since then it’s been a flurry of statements and releases and quotes and conferences and then late Thursday night Texas Tech released a 21-minute video giving the schools position and justification for actions related to the school’s handling of the Brendan Sorsby Saga.
We said last night this one falls in to the, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should category”. When you’re the nail, and Texas Tech has been the nail this week, don’t give your opponents a hammer to hit you with. Earlier Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt had issued a great statement in respect to the situation and even what Sorsby would have to do to ever play for Texas Tech again. It was brief and perfect.
Even Tech HC Joey McGuire tried to say the right things down in Houston, but one line about the kid not committing murder was all it took for those who wanted a hammer to nail Tech… and that was in just a few minutes.
It’s pretty much P.R. 101. You don’t have to over-talk. We think Texas Tech over-talked on this one last night. The Hocutt statement would have taken you into the weekend news cycle. It wouldn’t have made everything go away, but it would have tamped things down. Instead, the video release keeps you in the headlines again today and more. It just didn’t need to happen that way.
Who knows what we’ll be talking about by the time 5:30 rolls around this afternoon. We’ll have the latest on the Sorsby Saga, what the Big 12’s other ADs and schools will attempt to do to keep Texas Tech from playing Sorsby and who is or isn’t suing whom by this afternoon. There will be lawyers…
All of that and of course our every-four-years deep-dive on the USMNT and their World Cup chances.
Maybe not that.
