5 Things We Know On A Sunday
- The Saturday snow around the Panhandle and South Plains this weekend couldn’t have been a surprise to anyone who was ever involved in high school track. In fact, all things considered, there were many a days when the weather this weekend would have been welcomed for a West Texas track meet. No dirt? No wind? No problem. Just put on some Icy Hot or Atomic Balm and get out there and run! Pro Tip in wet weather: Stretch on the bus, not on the ground….
- Fact. Lots of folks are all about “Buy American” right up until they have to pay for it. It’s not a Slogan. It’s what will keep this country strong in the decades to come. It truly is a national security issue from food and fibre to natural resources and even those medications you see advertised every 7 minutes on TV. You can pay for it now, or you can for pay it later, but at some point the bills come due for outsourcing manufacturing and giving away competitive advantages economically to friends and foes alike. So… make your choice, but know it has consequences now and in the future for your kids and grandkids.
- Top 3 All-Time Greatest Lubbock Fried Chicken Joints: No. 3. River Smith’s. The original on 4th St with the OG big screen projection TV showing CMT videos at lunch in the early 90s. Fantastic. No. 2. Danny’s Fins & Hens. They used to serve them at Texas Tech football games in the Jones Stadium Press Box as the meal. Media folks around the country loved it. No. 1. Richard’s Fried Chicken. Over on Ave P by the old Lower Field, starting in the mid-60s it was a Lubbock staple. Best hands-down decades running. Been gone for a while now and no one seems to have come close. Lots of great fried chicken out there, but until otherwise noted, nothing has eclipsed Richard’s.
- Ma’am, if I wanted a Pepsi I would have ordered it in the first place. . .
- The greatest compliment we can give Val Kilmer as an actor is that you never felt like you were watching Val Kilmer. You saw the character. From early on in his career up until he quit making movies due to his health issues; you saw the character. That’s amazingly hard to do when an actor becomes famous. Very few can do it. In fact, most of who we consider “great actors” all ended up playing a caricature of themselves as their career progressed. I won’t name any names, but I’m sure you can thank of of few. . . So, thanks for the memories Doc, Ice, Jim and so many others.

Suggestion for the Saturday column name…
“Raiderland Red Dirt Dispatch”
The headline font each Saturday would look like an Old West newspaper. Guaranteed to be a big seller at the General Store.
Perhaps most important, it matches your macho handlebar facial hair look.
WE might be able to work with this.
