5 Things We Know On A Sunday

1. There’s nothing more optimistic than a college football fan in August. They are the like the folks on that noon flight going into Las Vegas on a Friday. Here’s to you, College Football Fan, enjoy the drink coupons, tell your buddies this is the year and believe it! Because every now and then, you just might be right!
2. Government can’t fix anything in your life. It can only get out of your way so you can fix it yourself.
3. Top 3 Greatest Lubbock College Drink Specials All-Time: No. 3. Any Drink, Any Coin. The Basement/Virgin Club. Circa 1989-91. This was before the TABC cracked down. We’d bring a ziplock bag of change, set it on the table and tell the nice waitress to keep bringing cheap Tanq & Tonics until the bag was empty. No. 2. Gardski’s Loft. Dollar Drinks each night of the week. I think Wednesday was Fuzzy Navel Night. Did we want a fuzzy navel? NO! Did we have a couple before heading out to Midnight Rodeo… yes, yes we did. No. 1 Bladder Buster nights at “fill-in-the-blank bar” in town. Simple concept. Starts at 5PM. FREE DRINKS until someone has to get up and go to the bathroom. This was at once wonderful and disgusting. They posted guards at the bathroom doors. People were shamed. Things happened that shouldn’t have happened. I’m not proud to have been a part of this, but I was. Forgive me. . . And that’s pretty much how college drink specials went to die in the early 90s…
4. I’m convinced that the last thing anyone really wants in their life is to get what they deserve….
5. I just completed another lap around the sun. I have no idea how to act my age or even what it means to be how old I am. I’m just glad I’m still moving forward. I thank my wife, my son and all of you for making it fun to get up each day and do what we do. I feel like, if you can do that, you’re really blessed. If each day you wake up and are more excited than the day before because of the endless possibilities God gives us through his Grace and Salvation; we’re doing ok. So, here’s to the beginning of another lap around the sun. I think, like each one behind me, it will be the best one yet!
