5 Things We Know On A Sunday

  1. Beyond just great golf, The Masters reinforces to me each year that most folks still embrace decorum, tradition and history. In fact, I think it proves that a lot of folks crave these things in a modern society that often seeks to denigrate, downplay and flat-out remove those things from our public lives. So, here’s to the last place on earth seeming that says no cell phones allowed and will sell you a two dollar sandwich for two dollars.
  2. Speaking of traditions, loved watching most of “The Ten Commandments” on ABC/KAMC 28 last night. Pleased they still keep that tradition going. One thing though. I’d love for them to show it uncut next year with no commercials. Maybe have a few crawls or logos like in soccer on TV, but the movie is best enjoyed not cutting it up into little segments. It’s an epic and needs to be experienced that way. Also, if any movie theater offered a showing of it on the Big Screen, they’d be shocked how quickly tickets would sell. So it shall be written. So it shall be done.
  3. Top 3 All-Time Greatest Lubbock Onion Rings: No. 3. The Reserve, A Culinary Tavern. Yes, they’re a sponsor and yes their onion rings are that good. A meal unto themselves. No. 2. Spanky’s. Don’t tell anyone, but the onion rings are better than the fried cheese. No. 1. Never duplicated, the beer batter onion rings at The Brittany. That and a hickory burger and your day was complete.
  4. I haven’t fished much at all lately. Same goes for playing golf. Still, those are two activities that even just thinking about doing them, or remembering a great day on the water or the course, brings you happiness. It proves that some things are as much about the preparation leading up and the memories retained afterwards that make it great. Still, I gotta quit wishing, I gotta go fishing…
  5. The crafters of the Texas State Constitution were brilliant. They knew by only having the legislature meet every two years instead of each year, it would limit the damage politicians could do to the public. At this point, I’m great with them meeting every three years. I could probably be talked into just four years with the governor having the ability to call a special session if needed. But then again, when politicians are in Austin, we’re safe from them roaming around their hometowns doing any damage. . .
