Brought to you in part by Shropshire Insurance of Texas. Based right here in Lubbock, Jeff Shropshire and his staff are Independent, just like all great West Texas. An agency big enough for the whole State but just the right size for expert personal services. Give them a call this week and tell them thanks for being a great part of Raiderland!

5 Things We Know On A Sunday

  1. The sounds and smells of rain are still two of the greatest things a West Texan can experience. Here’s hoping all of our Ag Producers got beneficial rainfall this weekend and have a great shot to finish up a solid crop! Even if you don’t think you’re involved in agriculture on the South Plains, I assure you, you are. A little delay at a football game is a small price to pay for what could be a rain worth millions and millions of dollars to the West Texas economy. Farmers buy groceries and clothes too. And season tickets. . .
  2. We should all be watching Jerry Lewis and a great telethon today. America was a more connected and better country when we could all talk about the crazy Las Vegas lounge acts we saw perform in the wee hours of the morning while staying up watching the tote board go higher and higher as we raised money to fight Muscular Dystrophy. Heck, as kids, you might have walked around the neighbored with a little red and white milk carton, taking donations and then calling in your pledge. When you saw your name scroll across the bottom of the TV, it was something else. Is the Labor Day Telethon something too hokey from the past to ever make a comeback? Probably. And that’s a shame.
  3. As we hit September this week, it occurs to me that some of the small boxes of Christmas decorations and things that I have in my office, probably aren’t going to make it back out to our storage box car this year. At least it will save time here in a few weeks when we start decorating.
  4. Speaking of holidays, I know they have to sell something and do something at your local grocery stores, but August seems just a wee bit early for Halloween stuff and candy to be out there. Isn’t there something we can do more “September” related than Halloween? Football themed items? Anything? Halloween folks must have a really strong lobbying and market group behind them. U. S. President Williams Howard Taft was born on September 15, 1857. Maybe we can all rally around him and have Taft-Themed Celebrations to break up the Halloween Grip. I mean Taft was the first President to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a MLB game. Seems like a fun guy….
  5. A saltine cracker with some peanut butter smeared on it, topped off with a slice of jalapeƱo will make you a huge hit at your next tailgate party. You’re welcome.
