5 Things We Know On A Sunday

  1. We read this week that The Farmer’s Almanac will print its final edition for 2026. I’m pretty sure I had no idea there was a difference to this publication, founded in Maine 208 years ago and The Old Farmer’s Almanac from New Hampshire, which informed us they’re still going strong since 1792. I’m not sure if ever purchased an “almanac” of any kind. So I guess I’m the problem in 2025. That said, I’ll buy one today. Maybe it will explain why my truck dashboard showed 91 degrees yesterday here in West Texas ….Still, it’s another sign of the times we live in where what used to take a book to curate and publish is now on your phone. . . Progress?
  2. Speaking of “progress”, Wendy’s announced they’re going to shut down 100s of locations in the U.S. No shock if you’ve followed the company for the last few years. Sales down and they seem to have no idea what their identity is. Let me help you out Wendy’s…it’s right there in your name. Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers. Get back to your Dave Thomas roots. Stop trying to be cool. You’re not cool. You’re Old Fashioned and that’s great. Embrace it. Hire those nice old ladies who used to ask, “Where’s The Beef”. Put your workers in old fashioned clothes. Get retro on your designs. Be “uncool”. Stop trying to sell me something called “Tendeys” If somebody started up a hamburger chain like the original Wendy’s… it might work. Wendy’s should look into it.
  3. We’d like to thank U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington for his service to West Texas as he announced he will not seek re-election for the District 19 seat. What we really want to thank him for is giving us great political fun and drama over the next several months as local Republicans around here jockey and position themselves to go ride the D.C. Gravy Train. These jobs don’t come up often so get ready for some fun and tons of political ads in the coming season. Great for the economy! By the time some of the candidates get done trying to position themselves as the most conservative in the race, they’ll all make Ronald Reagan look like Bernie Sanders. This should be fun.
  4. I chuckle every time I hear an announcer or reporter talking about something being in “unchartered waters”. All I can think of is The Skipper and Gilligan manning the helm of a fishing boat in a bad storm. . . worst charter ever. It’s “uncharted” when we don’t know where we are… You’d think some of those “Big J” journalism schools might want to put that in week two or three in their classes.
  5. It’s a shame there aren’t more great “Thanksgiving Movies”. It’s pretty much “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and the Peanuts Thanksgiving special and that’s about it. You know when the Hallmark Channel isn’t cranking out 20 Thanksgiving Movies a year that there just must not be much interest in the holiday or the story lines. Once again, Christmas proving it’s better than Thanksgiving on the holiday hierarchy. Bring on “Elf”!
