Happy Wednesday, Y’all!
We had more than a little going on around Raiderland, the world of college sports and beyond for a “slow” Tuesday in early Summer.
As expected, now former Red Raider Christian Anderson went in the first round of the NBA Draft last night. Pretty cool to watch him and family and Coach McCasland enjoying the moments in the Green Room as the Charlotte Hornets took him 18 overall. That’s right around where most mock-drafts had him going, the highest we saw was 16 to Memphis. Sounds like a decent fit and the analysts raved about him being the best shooting guard in the round. That sounds like the NBA today. You want to see him have a nice career both for him and for Texas Tech Basketball to have a little brand going on in the Association. Never hurts.
The biggest news of the day got snowed under a bit by the NFL declining to hold a supplemental draft, all while telling Brendan Sorsby to go pound sand. More on that in a bit.
What happened though at the NCAA was bigger as the D-1 council approved a five-years to play five-seasons plan that eliminates redshirts and medical seasons. We like it. It’s age-based. It will likely trigger a bunch of lawsuits from recent grads who will claim this cost them money. There will be lawyers. Always lawyers. If it does stand up to legal scrutiny it clarifies a lot of issues for college sports. At least as much as they can right now.
Meanwhile, back at the lawsuits, Sorsby’s lawyer Jeffery Kessler has already said he plans to sue the NFL to force them to have a draft and allow his client to work there. This seems like a bold plan and we’ll see how it works out. The league made it clear in their letter to Sorsby that they aren’t a big fan of him trying to escape punishment for sports gambling by coming to them. We’ll find out if the NFL has this right. It’s a really interesting legal question and Kessler does better with the NFL than he does NCAA issues for the most part. Either way, the Sorsby Saga is sad. He needs new advisors and should take the advice of the NFL and get his house and life in order over the next year and see what 2027 brings in the April draft. Folks might even start to like him by then. Maybe….
We’ll talk about all of that plus any and all news that the day brings us tonight with y’all LIVE on The Daily Broadcast. Join us LIVE at 5:30 Central via Twitter/X, the Raiderland YouTube Channel or the Raiderland Facebook Page. All Free, so sign-up for each one and never miss a thing.
