The iconic 70s band Chicago Transit Authority once asked the famous question, “Does anybody really know what time it is…does anybody care?”.
This morning college sports fans can ask the question of whether anybody really knows who is eligible to play and does anybody really care.
It was a wild couple of days starting on Friday when a Colorado federal judge issued a ruling saying all athletes would be eligible for the new 5 for 5 rule issued by the NCAA. Simply put, if you were a Sr. last year, you could come back and play sports.
But wait.
On Sunday the same judge issued a “clarification” on the ruling basically saying it only applies to the eligibility issue, not NCAA rules on transfers or the portal.
What does it mean for Texas Tech MBB specifically?
As near as we can tell, former Red Raider Darion Williams who played last year at N.C. State entered the portal after the season. He’d be eligible to move back to Lubbock. The same goes for Jamichael Stillwell from UCF. He also entered the portal and could transfer. What about former Red Raider Donovan Atwell? His case is a little different. He obviously signed a pro contract but didn’t last long. He’s in the same case in North Carolina ( state court ) as Williams. That’s where he’ll have to get legal clarity to come back to Texas Tech. That case is slated for an August 5 preliminary hearing.
Did we mention the NCAA is appealing all of this.
So, that’s the landscape of college sports as we begin the first week of football practice at Texas Tech….
Simple.
