The Saturday Column With No Name (Still Taking Nominations For A Great Name)
- Now former Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava has some of the dumbest advisors around him as anyone we’ve seen lately in pro/college sports. For those who don’t know, Nico played a hand with cards he didn’t have. He went into a hold-out mode with Tennessee football this week, wanting a huge NIL deal, other than the one he’d agreed to. So, here’s the deal NICO… you have the right to transfer ever year. You have no binding contract. That also means your employer can move on at the drop of a hat, unlike those teams in the NFL that are stuck with an unhappy player. This won’t change much in NIL or college sports, but it should be a great reminder to the players, that the schools still have a great spade card to play…they can move on and go get someone that looks just like you anytime they want. Until there are “long-term contracts” binding a player to a school, both sides can go nuclear anytime they want. It’s up to the player and his advisors to understand the leverage they have and don’t have. At the end of the day, Tennessee decided he wasn’t worth it, and it didn’t cost them a dime. Let that be a warning to other players who have family, friends and agents whispering in their ear about what they are “worth” ….
- There’s no reason Texas Tech Baseball should be this bad. No logical, no reasonable and no acceptable reason. So, now it’s up to Tim Tadlock and Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt to determine they why’s and what’s next. I support whatever decision is made with this program going forward. Texas Tech has invested more than enough into baseball to expect the most modicum of competitiveness at a high level. Stay tuned.
- Just because, we want to share this gem of Texas Rangers Baseball history with y’all. If you love the Rangers and love baseball on the radio, take a trip back through time and listen to this game from 1978 with Hall of Famers Jon Miller on the call for Texas. It’s the Rangers and the Detroit Tigers, live from Tiger Stadium on a warm early August night in ’78.
Enjoy the rest of your Saturday and we’ll see you Sunday with our 5 Things Column.
