Welcome back to the Saturday Column With No Name. Someday, maybe, it will earn a name. For now… it’s just some quick Saturday thoughts from Raiderland and West Texas. So, as we wait to see if it might actually rain again around Raiderland World HQ tonight… let’s get this going. As always, your comments are more than welcome here on the site, on X or Facebook and we appreciate y’all sharing this with your friends who need more Raiderland in their lives!
The Saturday Column With No Name
- Texas Tech did the right thing this week making sure Tim Tadlock will be back as head coach of Red Raider Baseball. For those who question his commitment to winning, his understanding of baseball, his ability to evaluate talent and his willingness to compete in the new era of college baseball…. you’re wrong. Tadlock and Texas Tech officials made a crucial error in thinking what worked in football and basketball would work in baseball. Mainly, that it would be NIL that would get the players. Tech had decent NIL for baseball. The mistake was not seeing that the top 20-30 programs around the country would immediately go to the full scholarship level. That’s hundreds of top player the last two cycles who wouldn’t even return a call to Texas Tech, regardless of NIL money. That’s changed. If we’re having the same record and conversation this time next year; I’ll be shocked. If we are, I’ll be the first to say I was wrong and that it’s time for Texas Tech to make a change. I don’t think I’ll be wrong. . .
- Seeing so many Texas Tech fans passionate about Tech Softball still reminds me of the hyper-growth of the Lady Raiders in the early 90s. Folks love a winner. It doesn’t matter the sport, men or women. Hell, most folks loving Texas Tech Softball right now don’t know a thing or two about the game. And that’s just fine. They’re learning. Just like me. So enjoy the ride and embrace some Sunday Softball. it will ruin ESPN’s day if Texas Tech pulls the “HUGE” 11-6 upset tomorrow. I wonder if they’ll play it that way on the broadcast…They should if they believe the NCAA Selection Committee…
- Kyle Busch was never one of my favorite drivers. In fact, I probably rooted against him quite a bit in the 2006 as he was rattling the cages of the older drivers I was a fan of in NASCAR. As Busch got older though, he joined that elite club. The Old Guys Trying To Hold Off Young Guys Club. I generated more and more respect for him. Decided that I probably liked him. Started to root for him. Depending on your age, you know exactly what we’re talking about. I had the same experience with Jeff Gordon at the end of his NASCAR career. It was awkward to say the least… With the passing of Busch this week from what we now know was an extreme case of pneumonia that went sepsis in a matter of hours… it reminds us once again that no day is promised no matter your age, your wealth, your health or your talent. Busch finished his race is life well, as a father, husband and driver. His last Victory Lane quotes were great that day at Dover and will ring true through the years….”
It’s that simple. When it comes to the things you cherish in life… the moments and people that matter… “you never know when the last one is”.
Thank you Kyle Busch for great memories and a great legacy. Even if we called you “Shrub” for many, many years… Don’t hold it against us.
