5 Things We Know About Conference Realignment

  1. The Big 12 woke up stronger than the Pac 12 Friday morning. The Big 12 has solid membership, a solid foot-print in the central time zone ( that matters ) and schools committed to make it work. If nothing had happened regarding USC and UCLA leaving the Pac-12 for the Big 10, that statement would still be true. The money the Big 12 will generate is going to be higher than the Pac-12 without USC and UCLA. Count on it.
  2. Arizona and Arizona State would be in the Big 12 before the fireworks die out on Monday night if the Big 12 offered right now. They know it, you know it, the American People know it. They should jump now and force the hand of Utah and maybe Oregon. Take up two slots out either four or six slots on the dance card of relevant conferences. Make those schools panic.
  3. Speaking of relevant conferences, without the LA market and USC/UCLA; the Pac-12 is not relevant. None of the other markets drive anything beyond Phoenix. And we got them coming to the Big 12, right? Eugene? Nope? Seattle? Nope, they don’t care about college sports out there. Well of course Stanford drives the bus in the bay, right? Ha. The remaining schools in the Pac-12 have to know tonight they have no shot to command much. So, who blinks first?
  4. If Stanford applies to the Big 12 for membership, I’ll pay a hunnerd cash dollars if any Texas Tech official will leak out that Tech denied them membership. I want the quote to be, ” Gosh, we just didn’t think they’d be a good fit, with all their smartness and whatnot”. 100 dollars. Cash. Make it happen. (Same thing goes for Cal Berkley)
  5. Texas Tech will be fine no matter what happens. The Big 12 will still matter going forward and the SEC and Big 10 are gonna need someone to play. This is going to an NFL-AFL style set-up with the Big 10 and SEC controlling about 80 teams give or take. Fox will run one side, ESPN the other. Each will have a 16 team playoff. it will funnel to a Super Bowl the week before the NFL Super Bowl. Folks will make a lot of money. Football will be good. And you’ll like it. Trust me.
