5 Things We Know On A Sunday – 2022 Edition

  1. I was well into adulthood before I realized a lot of folks don’t like to eat black-eyed peas. Growing up in West Texas it was pretty much a staple. Now I’ll admit they’re not in my Top 5 Of Beans, but there are so many other members of the bean family to hate on. Let’s just say if we had to eat English peas for good luck each year, I’d be out of luck. . . That said, I had one older relative tell me years ago that folks who don’t like black-eyed peas were never hungry. Not the best marketing slogan in the world, but you get the idea. So ya, we loaded up on black-eyed peas in grand style Saturday! Happy New Year!

2. With the new year, lots of folks are working on New Year’s Resolutions and all sorts of things like that. They’re great in theory but in practice they usually fail. A goal without a plan to reach the goal is obviously not gonna work. My wife is using the word “recommit” this year. I love that. We have all committed to certain values, practices and goals in our lives. We all fall short in some way. While it’s easy to beat yourself up sometimes, what you really just need to do is recommit to what you already know you value, creat some daily habits that strengthen that and move forward, 1% better each day. Lots of days in the year, so lots up chance to get a lot better. Easier said then done? Sure. But what isn’t? Good luck this year! What are you gonna recommit to?

3. Top 3 Former NFL Players Turned Actor: No. 3. Roman Gabriel. Gabriel was in John Wayne’s “The Undefeated”. What more do you want? No. 2. Merlin Olsen. Also in The Undefeated”. “Little House On The Prairie”. No. 1. Jim Brown. The 3rd Greatest NFL Running Back of all-time was in “The Dirty Dozen”. I don’t care what else he did, he got those grenades thrown down the air vents on the Nazis and that’s enough for me. Best combo of talent on the field and on the big screen.

4. No matter how well we organize, pack and label our Christmas decorations, I’ve no doubt come next November I won’t be able to find something I “know” exactly where I put it. In a way though, it makes getting out Christmas decorations a bit like an early Christmas Day! You never know what you may find when you open a box or container! So, to all those in Raiderland who are putting up Christmas decorations this weekend, Good Luck and Happy 9th Day of Christmas!

5. Watching Baylor and Ole Miss play in the Sugar Bowl Saturday night only reinforced the idea that there is NO reason Texas Tech fans shouldn’t hold the same level of expectation for the Red Raider football program in a couple of years. Neither of those programs have any inherent advantage over Texas Tech. Neither was that much farther along than Texas Tech a few years ago to think that Joey McGuire and his staff can’t close a similar gap in a similar amount of time. Must there be an upgrade in talent and coaching? Of course. What really needs to happen is an upgrade in expectations. For Texas Tech fans, feel free to start 2022 by saying, “Why not us?”.

Happy New Year!
