Happy Monday, Y’all !

It’s not often you have a team ranked 13th in the country with a 7-1 record and you feel like it just got a fresh start. But, that is exactly what it feels like after watching Texas Tech beat Arizona Saturday 34-26 with a new look ground attack led by now QB1 Thomas Castellanos. 328 yards of rushing will do that for ya. It also seems to be the first hint of a real offensive identity under Texas Tech OC Mack Leftwich. Saturday looked like a different team offensively. And with it, a different set of expectations perhaps for some Texas Tech fans going forward.

Texas Tech opened up Sunday as a 17 point favorite over West Virginia. Texas Tech will be favored in every game going forward for the next month. With what you saw Saturday, you’ve got to feel better about November than you did for a lot of October. A rarity this late in the season, but then Joey McGuire has always been about, “What’s Next” when it comes to Texas Tech Football.

The Red Raider find themselves in an enviable position in college football right now. They control their own destiny. If Texas Tech wins out and finishes 11-1, there’s about a 93% chance they’ll be in the playoffs, whether they play in the Big 12 Championship game or not. Going into any season, that should be one of the goals. You control your fate, over the final four games.

We’ll talk about that, look at the rest of the Big 12 and college football on the eve of the first CFB Playoff Rankings and also get set for Texas Tech Basketball. The Tech Men open up tonight in Lubbock against Jackson State. Texas Tech is one of the most interesting teams in college basketball this season. Depending on who can play and when they can play, Texas Tech is anywhere from a 4th or 5th place team in the Big 12 to a Final Four contender. And so it begins tonight. Add in whatever news the day brings us and we should be ready for a rocking Monday night show.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Raiderland Rewind from Saturday afternoon, here ya go: Something to do at work today and a way to see what a few other folks were thinking after the game.

All that would make for a fine way to start the week, but as always in Raiderland . . . there is more!

Ultimate Weekend Warriors

Each Monday in Raiderland we start the week off be celebrating the Ultimate Warriors. The folks who got it done on and off the field or court. Named in honor of former Texas Tech MBB player Jason Sasser who Texas Tech HC James Dickey labeled “The Ultimate Warrior” back in the mid-1990s. Perhaps one of the greatest Texas Tech nicknames of all-time. So, each Monday, we’ll give you a few of ours to get you started and then you can give us yours in the comments or on Social Media or on The Daily Broadcast tonight. Always was to weigh-in around these parts.

  1. Thomas Castellanos. QB. Texas Tech. Anytime you make a debut as a first-time Tech starter leading a run-game that generated 328 yards of rushing, you get the mention. Brought in back in late August, heck, no one knows if he even knows the offense right now. Then again, maybe Texas Tech is now running the Castellanos Offense from here…
  2. Texas Tech Soccer. #11 Texas Tech beat #8 Baylor Friday night 1-0 in a massive Big 12 win. This team is playing their best soccer right now. Perfect timing. They’re on track to host NCAA Tournament games in Lubbock. The crowds have been awesome all season. They’re a huge Tech success story under Tom Stone.
  3. Ropes Eagles. Texas High School Football. We don’t often go the high school route around here, but here’s a tip of the cap to Coach Riker and the 9-0 Eagles. Just so happens to be my son’s former team. Now, three-straight district championships for Ropes, something we don’t believe have ever happened in 11-man football for the school It’s a great day to be a Ropes Eagle!

OK, there’s just a few of the candidates for Ultimate Weekend Warrior. Give us your best and we’ll see y’all tonight!

Don’t forget about the great daily lunch specials at Gators!
