Happy Tuesday, Y’all

“The ramifications of today’s ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership,” Yormark told ESPN. “I’ve been consulting with our key stakeholders and have scheduled meetings with our conference ADs and executive board this week. We are also in touch with [NCAA president] Charlie Baker and anticipate the NCAA to appeal the order in the next 24-48 hours. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation.” Big commish Brett Yormark to ESPN.

And so it begins.

Now that Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby has been granted a temporary injunction that looks like it could allow him to play all through the season the What Next Phase has started around Lubbock and all of college football.

All of college sports really….

The Big 12 will have a conference call today amongst athletic directors to discuss the situation. One AD, K-State’s Gene Taylor has already publicly said he’d be in favor of not playing Texas Tech if Sorsby plays. Easy to say when Tech isn’t on their schedule. So what will the league do? What can they do? Can they make a quick rule saying anyone who admits to betting on sports is ineligible to play in the Big 12? That would be quite the legal hurdle to leap, but what if it ended up in a Kansas City courtroom for months… The process becomes the punishment as they say?

Is Texas Tech so hated right now amongst the Big 12 leadership they’d be willing to do it?

I put nothing past anyone involved in college sports right now. The lack of rules or willingness or ability to enforce the ones they have go both ways now. It could be a player testing the system or it could be the system itself just devouring anything it doesn’t like and daring anyone to stop it from happening.

Smart money says Sorsby plays without incidence now for Texas Tech, but anything is possible at this point. As noted sports business expert Andrew Brandt is wont to say, “There will be lawyers”.

By the time we get to The Daily Broadcast this afternoon, who knows what the Texas Tech and Big 12 landscape will look like.
