Welcome back to The Saturday Column With No Name. With no Texas Tech Football today we get a few minutes to opine about stuff. Opining is always good. So settle in and take in the column.
- The latest story about the firing of now former Texas Tech Volleyball HC Tony Graystone is a classic example of many truths in life. You need to read the fine work of Nathan Giese and Josh Peter from the A-J/USA Today. Do the alleged incidents regarding player treatment rise to the level of firing for cause? Hard to say. And it doesn’t really matter. Greater talent gets greater latitude. That goes for players and coaches alike. Had the program be winning, or even just moderately competitive in the Big12 over the last few seasons, this might have played out different. Bottom line is the Texas Tech and Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt we’re looking for a nail and Graystone, inadvertently perhaps, gave them the hammer to do what they probably wanted to do at the end of the season, which is fire Graystone and move on. The bigger question now for Texas Tech, why has Volleyball lagged behind every other program at Texas Tech. Each program that Texas Tech has invested in over the last few years has improved, or flat-out thrived at a national level. Except Volleyball. Does Texas Tech just want to field a program or does the department want it to be at least competitive? For a while, it seemed a few women’s programs at Texas Tech were allowed to wallow in below-average status as long as they stayed out of USA Today for negative reasons. Is that about to change at Texas Tech? We will find out. There is zero reason Texas Tech can’t compete in any sport in the current Big 12 landscape, let alone nationally. What happens next will tell they story. As for the firing of Graystone, it was going to happen anyways; we just hate to see it happen this way with so many questioning the process. . .
- Meanwhile, Texas Tech MBB is still wondering exactly who is or isn’t on the team. Is there a bigger What IF than Texas Tech MBB right now. As we sit here today, Darrion Williams is eligible pending more hearings in his case coming up in early December as the NCAA appeals his status with others in a Texas court of appeals. Then there is Donovan Atwell. Eligible right now, pending of course, an October 15 hearing coming up in Lubbock on his TRO. As of now, UCF transfer Jamichael Stillwell in Ineligible and he’s waiting on further legal options. If you’re HC Grant McCasland, do you roll the dice and play all three? Do you hold them all out until you really know what’s going on for fear on NCAA sanctions? Texas Tech could be anywhere from a mid-pack Big 12 team to a legitimate Elite 8/F4 Type squad depending on how all of this plays out. You used to have to buy a program to know who was on your team. Now you have to tune in to Court TV. This ain’t no way to run a railroad and remember, the NCAA could have avoided it all if they wanted to….
- For our friends out there who are fans of The Dallas Cowboys, fret not. The Jerry Jones Era won’t last forever. In fact, according to quick research on GROK, based on heirs and their ages; the Jones Era probably won’t last more than past the 2050s or 2060s given the age of the grandchildren. So hang in there Dallas fans. You’ve still got hope. And as we know when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, hope is a horrible thing!
