5 Things We Know On A Sunday: West Texas’ Best Month, Soda Pop Truth, Honoring Our South Plains Vets, Changes In Latitudes Plus The Demise Of The Great Comic Strips

Brought to you every Sunday by the great people at Shropshire Insurance of Texas. Independent, just like all great West Texans! Based in Lubbock, big enough for the whole Great State of Texas. Give Jeff and his staff a holler this week and let them get to work on all of your insurance needs. Tell them Thanks for supporting what we do here in Raiderland!

5 Things We Know On A Sunday

  1. Fact. If you could only experience one month of weather a year in West Texas… it would be hard to beat October. Mornings are crisp, evenings are warm and for the most part that West Texas Wind is staying away. Add in the fact you get great high school football Friday Nights, Texas Tech games on Saturday and Sundays that stretch-out as long as the horizon… ya; October you’re doing it right.
  2. Almost any drink that contains the words “Cream Soda” is instantly better than any and all drinks. Except one. Pumpkin Spice Cream Soda. Nope. That’s the exception that proves the rule.
  3. The way folks come together to support the South Plains Honor Flights is an amazing thing. It restores your faith in folks and proves how great this region is. A heartfelt thanks to all of our Veterans and I hope each of you gets to make that Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and experience the love and thanks of a grateful nation!
  4. You can’t listen to Jimmy Buffett and be in a bad mood. This is science. Hopefully y’all have an artist or group that creates that vibe for you in your life. Now that Jimmy’s gone, I’m looking around for someone up-and-coming. Ain’t seen ’em yet.
  5. I am convinced that if comic strips were still great today, many an American newspaper would still be thriving. As comic strips began to wither and die in the 1990s and early 2000s, so began the slow demise of print newspapers. From Tank McNamara to Peanuts, The Far Side to Garfield, Doonesbury, Dilbert and of course Calvin And Hobbes; we had it great. There was a reason every Sunday to get the paper. If we didn’t mention your favorite comic strip, fire away in the comments and take us down your memory lane.
