5 Things We Know On A Sunday

1. If air conditioning isn’t one of the Top 5 inventions over the last hunnerd years or so, I don’t know what would displace it. Don’t think so? Turn it off for a few days. We didn’t plan to, but a lightning strike Friday night had other ideas. I’ll say this. If you really want to enjoy “Yellowstone, 1883” in all it’s glory, do without AC in early July. So, here’s to you Mr. Air Conditioner Inventing Guy. And here’s to Arctic Air for coming out and getting us up and running again!
2. Really good professional fireworks shows are always better than “neighborhood” shows. Can remember going in the mid-70s to Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo for July 4th show. I couldn’t believe Lubbock didn’t have anything like that at Lowrey Field or Jones Stadium when we moved to Lubbock. Now that there’s the 4th”Not”On Broadway, they do what they can I suppose when it comes to a show. Most impressive one was around 1991 or so at the water park in Lubbock when they all exploded at once a few minutes into the show. Impressive! Short show, but impressive!
3. Top 3 Songs You Need To Listen To On July 4th: No. 3. Toby Keith “Courtesy Of The Red White And Blue”. No. 2. Charlie Daniels Band, “In America”. No. 1. “The President’s Own”, United States Marine Corp Band, “The National Anthem – Star Spangled Banner”.
4. Some of the best uniforms in all of sports are Red, White and Blue. It’s hard to screw it up, even though some manage to do it. The Buffalo Bills look from the 1970s is almost formal wear. The 76ers of the early 80s was glorious. The Los Angeles Dodgers home white with Dodgers in blue and the number in red on the front, simple and elegant. SMU’s current football unit, a throwback to the Pony Excess days, is fantastic. If you’re picking out colors for a team, you can’t go wrong with Red, White and Blue.
5. There are a lot of good movies about the U.S. Revolutionary War, but there aren’t any great movies about it. I’ll watch Patton and Lonesome Dove on Tuesday. With the AC on.
