5 Things We Know On A Sunday

  1. Saturday on the South Plains may have been the “perfect” weather day for folks not from around here to experience! We started at dawn with cloudy skies, went from that to a nice sleet and drizzle for a few hours, then transitioned into sunshine by mid-afternoon. Of course that was accompanied by blowing dust, that the early morning moisture just couldn’t tamp down. From 30s to 50s and everything in between. Don’t worry though, it’ll be 65 on Sunday and 71 on Monday. Sleet to 70s in 48 hours. West Texas. Gotta love it!
  2. The idea that university presidents somehow tie the schools their school plays sports against into their academic credentials amazes me. It’s 2023. Sports and Academics have been divorced for decades. At least some folks are owning up to it. Others though still think that if they play football or basketball in a certain league that has any impact on the value of the degrees they award to graduates. Yes. I graduated from Texas Tech during the SWC era. I can’t tell you how many folks were so impressed that I went to a school that played Rice. . . Must have made an additional 35 bucks over the years because of that.
  3. Top 3 Quotable Movies: No.3. Tombstone. “I’m your huckleberry”. No. 2. Monty Python and The Holy Grail. “Tis but a flesh wound!”. No.1. Lonesome Dove. Yes, we know, technically not a movie but rather a TV mini-series. We don’t care. “I hate rude behavior in a man. I won’t tolerate it.”.
  4. Kris Kristofferson never wrote a better song than, “Loving Her Was Easier (than anything I’ll ever do again).
  5. Saw this weekend where President Jimmy Carter is entering into hospice care, taking in the final moments of his amazing life at home with family and loved ones. I am saddened to see another link to America’s Greatest Generation so close to leaving us. His presidential policies and performance aside, President Carter still represents one last link to that WWII generation and the issues that shaped our nation for so many years. While I disagreed vehemently with many of his policies then and to this day, I have a great respect for him as a man. President Carter may in-fact have been one of our greatest Ex-Presidents of all-time. His work with Habitat for Humanity alone deserves so much respect. He impacted, I think, far more people in a positive way after he left office than most Presidents do. Enjoy your final days, Mr. President. You have run your race and you have run it well.
