Happy Tuesday, Y’all !

As is often the case in life, things go smoothly until they don’t. That seems the case with Texas Tech Football this August. Until Monday, no news was great news. No injuries. Nobody missing in action. Glowing reports from the coaches and media alike. Everything was as planned.

Until Monday.

News broke late in the day, first by One3 Pete Nakos and then confirmed by Texas Tech via their “What’s Next” podcast that USC transfer RB Quinten Joyner had suffered a torn ACL and was out for the season. The once stacked RB position takes a big blow and the domino effect on special teams will be felt with J’Koby Williams probably limited now in the return game. Williams and Cam Dickey are now your proven run threats and that’s really it. Tech also gets hurt in the pass-protection area as reports had Joyner really excelling in that area.

Does this fundamentally change what the Red Raiders can do this year? No. It does limit the margin for error that all teams play with on the injury front. That’s the case every year. This year you hope Tech has enough weapons all around the field to overcome how this may have changed the Mack Leftwich approach to his first offense at Tech. We will soon see.

We’ll have that to discuss tonight as well as a visit with Big 12 journalist John Kurtz. We feature his podcast most days in our Hot Links section and have known John since the inception of the Big 12. We’ll find out his thoughts on who and how many Big 12 teams could make the CFB Playoffs this year.
