Welcome back to another edition of the Saturday Column With No Name. We never what what might pop-up on the weekend, so hang in there and let’s see what’s shaking in Raiderland.
- Texas Tech MBB Grant McCasland is a wizard. Admit it now. You were worried about the roster for this coming season. Instead, McCasland goes full Kevin Costner in Draft Day, sprinkles some magic West Texas dirt on the roster and over the past few weeks you’ve gone from middle of the pack in the Big 12 to a legitimate Top 10 team in the country, if not better. With the media reports Friday that 6’11” post player Bassala Bagayoko is on his way to Lubbock, folks around the country are talking. With Darrion Williams and Jamichael Stillwell already in and perhaps Donovan Atwell making a return after a brief frolic in pro ball; this roster is loaded. It looks like J.T. Toppin is ahead of schedule as well, perhaps ready by December. Again, smart folks around the country are noticing and Texas Tech Basketball is now a very sharp play to make the Final Four or better. Smart investors should be buying Texas Tech now on the futures markets. . .
- One myth about Texas Tech Football is that the whole roster is all transfers and “bought” players. Brad Crawford at CBS Sports wrote a nice article this weekend blowing that myth up. In fact, Texas Tech has one of the highest percentage of local talent of any team in the P4 conferences. Give this a read and tell your friends. Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire may be doing a better job of owning Texas Talent than any coach in Texas Tech history. Which is another reason why this current Texas Tech program rise is sustainable.
- When it comes to this Texas Tech Football team, there won’t be a shortage of storylines. Who is the player we’re most interested in watching and seeing what kind of impact they make? It would be easy to say Micha Hudson at WR. We’ll go another direction and say Jacob Ponton at RT. Thrown into the fire last year as a youngster, Ponton may emerge as one of the best O-linemen in the Big 12 this year. We’re very high on his stock after a year of on-the-job training. Who makes your list for most interesting player to watch? Fire away in the comments below or on our Social Media feeds.
