The Saturday Column With No Name
- Less than a year ago, Texas Tech’s NIL group, The Matador Club, made a massive investment in Tech Softball. They brought in the national pitcher of the year from Stanford in Nijaree Canady. They helped new coach Gerry Glasco bring in a top national transfer class. They expended more money on Tech softball than perhaps the last ten years combined. And it worked. Canady was as advertised, claiming Big 12 Pitcher of The Year Award, and after today, Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player. With a 4-0 win over Arizona Saturday, Tech Tech ran the table in the tournament, not giving up a single run. Money well spent. Now it’s on to the NCAA Tournament where Texas Tech will host a regional for the first time. The similarities to Lady Raider Basketball from the early 90s are strong. The arrival of Canady, much like the arrival of Sheryl Swooped in 1991-92. Texas Tech won their first SWC title Swoopes junior year. The National Championship a year later. The crowds follow. I’m not saying Texas Tech Softball will win the National Championship next year… but here’s hoping we’re seeing a similar growth of Tech Softball that becomes sustainable for years to come with great crowds and competitive teams at the national level. I’ve seen it before. From Here, It’s Possible.
- When it comes to pro sports, timing is everything. Former Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough may become the latest example of that in New Orleans. With the announcement today that Derek Carr is returning, the Saints 2nd round QB pick is in a great spot to become a starter year one in the league. For better or for worse… He’ll have to beat out Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. If he can’t do that, he probably won’t have much of an NFL career anyways. So here’s to one of the great maxims in life…half of all success is just showing up! Now, the next thing Shough has to do… prove you’re not Mitch Trubisky 2.0. A Workout Warrior who looks great in practice and when you know what’s coming but when the game starts and things get fast…. Well, Texas Tech fans know what we mean.
- With Texas Tech Baseball struggling this season, fans of the program can enjoy a blast from the recent successful past tonight at the Texas Rangers take on the Detroit Tigers. It’s Jung vs. Jung tonight as the Tigers will have Jace Jung in the staring line-up against older brother Josh for the Rangers. Always cool when Red Raiders square-off in the big leagues. Even better for the Jung family with two brothers. Quick research says just over 400 brothers have played MLB all-time. That’s a pretty select group to be a part of. So, as the current Red Raiders stagger to the finish line in Big 12 play, you’ve got a little something to look forward to tonight.
