Is the Big 12 big enough for Texas Tech and the 15 other schools right now? ? ?
After a threat of legal action by Texas Tech/Texas AG Ken Paxton and ACTUAL legal action by the Big 12 against Texas Tech officials this week, all surrounding the Brendan Sorsby Saga, are we on the brink when it comes to Texas Tech’s relationship with the league? If so, what does that look like and mean for Texas Tech going forward.
It became obvious over the past week or so how much enmity and rancor exist in the Big 12 regarding Texas Tech these days. It’s not just Sorsby. It’s the NIL. It’s the portal. It’s Texas Tech Board of Regents Chairman pushing for the Protect College Sports act and more so publicly. The rest of the league feels intimidated and pushed around. They fought back.
For the league though, it desperately needs a school like Texas Tech to step up and be a national story and contender. Who’s gonna do it? Cincinnati? Kansas State? They need Texas Tech.
At the same time, Texas Tech right now needs the platform of the Big 12. Tech can’t simply take its ball and money and go somewhere else. Independence is a myth, even Notre Dame knows that. The Big 10 pretty much told you how they feel about Texas Tech this past week. The SEC doesn’t need anyone right now.
So Texas Tech, the other 15 school and Brett Yormark need to patch things up and fast. This could be a great season again for Texas Tech football and the Big 12 needs to be fully backing their best team. Publicly. Behind closed doors things will always be different. But to the outside world, the window needs to be cleaned up.
