Welcome back to The Saturday Column With No Name. Which is not factual. That’s the name of the column! But here were are with a free Saturday in September so we better take advantage of it. We’ve got good friends cooking ribs later this evening, so let’s get to it. Gonna be a great Saturday night in Raiderland!

1. Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwitch thinks too much. He has too much time on his hands. He needs to play golf more or go bowling instead of scheming things out during the week. We’re convinced not just Leftwitch, but a lot of hot, young, OCs around college and NFL overthink the room. Too many plays, too many options during the game, too much for players to drill on during the week and at the end of the day, an unsettled, mist-mash and a grab-bag of plays and formations that lead to no continuity and identity on offense. As we say, Leftwitch is not alone. He’s got plenty of company. Just because you can… doesn’t mean you should when it comes to offense. The scripted first two plays of the game Friday night against Houston are further proof of this. No need at all to do it. Even if it had “worked”, what was the point? You take the offense out of rhythm right off the bat and then Will Hammond has to clean up the Thomas Castellanos mess. So, take a lesson from Mike Leach. Put your game plan on a big notecard and call it a day. For Texas Tech Football going forward, less is more when it comes to goofy offense. Spot the ball.
2. The Big 12 needs to end this Monster Mistake of playing games in Ireland and England. They don’t care. You’ll never have the Cambridge in the Big 12. You’re not gonna make them fans and you won’t make money. Now maybe a certain energy drink would like to use the Big 12 to get into those markets, but it does nothing for the Big 12. It hurts the teams, hurts competition and is bad for everyone involved other than the advertiser. Hopefully Texas Tech will never agree to play a game there. If you want to make mistakes in marketing and growth, look at NASCAR around 2005 and how they slowly abandoned their traditional fan-base in search of folks who will never care about the product. I wonder who worked with NASCAR back in the day and could have learned from that huge mistake…. oh ya. . . Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. Play Big 12 games where Big 12 fans can go and get involved….
3. Admit it. Today has felt like Sunday all day long… where are the NFL games! This Friday Tech game messes up our weekend clock. That said… it gives us a little time to sink our teeth into the NFL games tomorrow. We are in a few contests this season. Probably won’t post our picks each week, but then again maybe we will. In one we have to pick 5 NFL games each week using “frozen” mid-week lines. Here’s what we have for Week 2. Wish us luck!
   Chicago -4.5 vs Minnesota
   Tampa Bay -8.5 vs Cleveland (already hate this pick!)
   Houston -2.5 vs Cincy
   Washington +4.5 @ Dallas
   Indianapolis +6.5 @ KC
