Happy Saturday from Raiderland. Nothing crazy today, just a few quick thoughts as the month of July continues to heat up! Enjoy, Comment and share with your friends.

  1. It’s a great day to be now former Texas Tech Baseball star Logan Hughes. He goes 17th overall to the Houston Astros in the MLB draft. That’s 4.87 million bucks of slot money. It’s a shame the team hasn’t been better around Hughes the last few years. Hopefully Texas Tech fans in years to come will be able to appreciate just how good he was. It reminds me a bit of Donald Harris in 1989 going in the first round number 5 overall to the Texas Rangers. Texas Tech Baseball at the time was still struggling to gain relevance under Larry Hays. Of course Harris was also a great DB for Texas Tech FB and some wonder if he made the wrong choice of sports. That said, Harris often gets left out of the discussion of great Texas Tech Baseball players all-time because of the teams he was on, not because of the talent. Trivia Question: Do y’all know who was drafted two picks after Harris in 1989? Give us the answer in the comments below or on the Raiderland Facebook Page or Twitter/X. That guy turned out to be a decent pick…
  2. Texas Tech Football might have been in the headlines for the last two months due to Brendan Sorsby, but Cincinnati is about to feel the full spotlight on an NCAA investigation over his time there and what they knew or didn’t know and how they proceeded. This story will last for months and months. Matt Hayes at USA Today had a nice editorial penned today. You should read it. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark should read it. At the end of the day, Texas Tech will look much better than any entity involved in the Sorsby Saga. Wright it down.
  3. Fact. Every school in the Big 12 has several multi-millionaires and yes, even billionaires ( heck some not even related to Oil and Gas). It’s up to the alumni of these schools to decide if they want to spend money on college sports. It’s not Texas Tech’s fault that numerous, not just one or two, wealthy alumni have decided that now is a great time to get an awesome R.O.I. on their money in the realm of college athletics. That’s the reality of today. In a few years it may be different, but we don’t think so. So, the rest of the Big 12 can rail and complain about reality, trying to drag down Texas Tech to their level if they choose to. But it will fail them Never fight reality. Embrace it and then work within the constructs of that reality. That’s the only way to achieve in this world, no matter what your profession or passion. Then, after you accept reality and work within it, then and only then can you change the reality to a new paradigm. The other Big 12 schools are missing that important step right now in college athletics. Texas Tech is accepting, embracing and changing… The others… will wish they had in five to ten years.

OK, that’s it for a Saturday afternoon in West Texas. The clouds are gathering, the humidity is rising and we may be in store for some much needed rain for the cotton crops and other crops out here on the South Plains. Remember, AG is and will always be the Lifeblood of this area. So support a farmer and buy some cotton shirts! We’ll see y’all in the morning with our 5 Things We Know On A Sunday column.
