“Texas Tech deserves more hate in Brendan Sorsby’s sordid eligibility case”
That’s the headline this morning at YahooSports. Of course it’s a column from Dan Wolken, so you’d expect it. What most Texas Tech fans are learning this week, maybe for the first time, just how deep the vitriol is around the Big 12 and the rest of the college sports world against Texas Tech.
Make no mistake, Texas Tech has a huge target on its collective back, not just on the field but maybe more off now. Folks around the country already didn’t like the fact that little old Texas Tech was crashing their elite parties in college football and other sports. They didn’t like that Texas Tech embraced N.I.L. in a manner any other school could have. We were told Texas Tech was too poor to compete for generations. Turns out Texas Tech just needed the rules to change to legally uses the resources it has as a university.
It ain’t no fun when the rabbits got the gun.
All of this came to a head Monday morning when a judge issued a ruling no one saw coming. Probably not the Brendan Sorsby camp. It don’t think Texas Tech as a school was expecting it. No one. And once it was released, the enmity overflowed around the country. At Texas Tech.
We’ve detailed how Texas Tech became caught up in this. No need to go through it again. And it’s not the point now.
With Big 12 ADs meeting yesterday to vent and come out with a Brett Yormark statement that translated to, “we’re pissed – and we don’t know what we’re gonna do about it”. To other ADs like Kansas State’s openly saying they wouldn’t play Texas Tech if Sorsby plays…the target became Tech. And Tech has become an easy target.
We realize some Texas Tech fans love the “Us Against The World Mentality”. Love the villain role. The Outlaw. Whatever you want to call it. I get it.
I also think Texas Tech can be visionary and be the model of what college sports can and should be. I personally want fans around the country to wish they were Texas Tech fans, not filled with hate for a program that should be seen as doing it the American Way.
