Happy Tuesday, Y’all !
Big 12 Media Days are here and that means it’s football time!
It seems like they’ve moved up the dates for Big 12 football media days over the last few years. In the past, these events usually took place around the end of July right before teams started camp. Now, I guess the plan is to go first and try to beat the SEC and Big 10 to the podium. Either way, the more or less non-newsworthy event is happening today and we’ll hear from Texas Tech’s contingent of players and Coach Joey McGuire as the day goes through. If anything interesting is said, it will be BREAKING NEWS.
If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember when all of the sportswriters and some of the electronic media actual had a caravan that went around to each school over about a ten day period in late July and early August. Of course this ended with the demise of the SWC in 1995. Until then though, the media would start off down in Houston and work their way up through Texas, over to Arkansas before they bolted and then finish up, dusty, dirty, tired and cranky in Lubbock.
It was an epic time when the SWC Media finished up in the Hubbaplex. After a day grilling Spike Dykes and talking to players, it was dinner at the 50 Yard Line for steaks and blueberry muffins, then over to the legendary Media Hospitality Room at The Lubbock Inn. Room 214 to be specific. Here’s to countless Sports Information Office student interns who helped Joe Hornaday make a run to The Strip for beer and liquor, iced down the bathtub and loaded it up and then served as “bartenders” for the aforementioned now less cranky media.
As a young media member then, you learned more than a few stories about the Old Days. Of course that meant when Don Williams from the Lubbock A-J was breaking in…. I kid.
So, it won’t be the same today in the metroplex for Big 12 media and not nearly as fun for the coaches and players who don’t get to “host” the media and show off facilities and great places to eat. Not all progress is progress in my opinion.
We’ll talk about all of that and more tonight on The Daily Broadcast. Join us LIVE on Twitter/X, Youtube and Facebook Live at 6:30 Central. Each Tuesday we give you a topic and you give us your two best examples. Might be sports related, might not be.
This week, since we’re talking about old Media Days, give us your Two Favorite Most-Quotable Coaches All-Time. This is any sport, college or pro, so choose wisely. Which coaches and managers were your favorites to hear interviewed and why. I’ll give you mine tonight, and so I don’t still your thunder, I’ll not choose any Texas Tech coaches, although you’ve got more than a few that were great quotes as we say.
Fire away in the comments and we’ll see you tonight on TDB.
